Dreaming Big - Bob Sawvelle

Have you ever dreamed the impossible with God? Is it possible that God wants you to dream higher than you ever imagined?

Through Christ, we are heirs of the inheritance of the Kingdom of God. Think, for a moment, about the greatness of God and the vastness of His Kingdom relative to the universe in which we live. Our sun and solar system are but one of the billions in our Milky Way Galaxy, with billions of more galaxies comprising our universe. God spoke all of this into existence and then named every star in the heavens.

There are simply no limits to His greatness, resources or creativity. He wants to do “exceedingly above all that we can ask for or think.” The plans that God has for our lives, what He wants to do through us, are much larger than most of us have fully embraced. God wants to bless our ideas, our creativity, and our dreams. In fact, He wants us to dream big with Him that He may be glorified through ordinary people doing extraordinary things by His power.

The Bible is full of examples of men and women who pursued their dreams, allowed God to work in their midst, and saw amazing things take place in their lives. Moses dreamed of delivering God’s people, Joshua dreamed of inhabiting the promised land, David dreamed of a Kingdom that represented an age yet to come, Zerubbabel dreamed of a re-built temple, Nehemiah dreamed of a re-built wall around Jerusalem, and Paul dreamed of taking the gospel to the known world to name just a few. These were ordinary people who had desires and dreams, and by faith moved ahead in spite of difficulties and impossibilities, to see dreams become a reality by God’s divine enablement.

What’s your dream today?

What’s your dream today? Dream Big, because you serve a Big God, and truly nothing is impossible with God. You have been given talents, time and treasure; use what God has given you as a faithful steward and watch how He will begin to breathe life upon your dreams. He wants to bless your creativity, your ideas, and your desires. Psalm 37:4 says to “delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Most of us have been taught that if we walk righteously with God, then God will place His desires in our hearts, and we will see these things come to pass.

It’s true that as we walk with Him, and become more like Him, many of our desires mirror His heart and values. However, He wants to bless our Godly dreams, and our sanctified imagination, for we have the mind of Christ. He gave us our individual imaginations and creativity, which is as varied as the stars in the heavens, to use uniquely to better our world and to reveal His glory.

I love beautiful music, especially worship music. I enjoy the creativity that is released through each worship leader and musician. Where does it start? In the heart, in the imagination. Then it’s created, the music lives, and many are blessed.

I once read a quote by Walt Disney saying “If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.” Think about what the Disney Corporation has become today and the millions of lives that have been affected by the dream Walt Disney had. He dreamed of a place where families could come for vacation and spend quality time together. What seemed to be a small idea with Mickey Mouse grew into one of the most successful theme parks in our nation and around the world. Where would we be if the Wright Brothers didn’t dream of flight? Or Henry Ford dream of the Model T? The list of creative ideas and dreams that have shaped and helped our world is vast and varied.

Dream Bigger than You

If an undertaking doesn’t involve faith, it’s most likely not God’s dream for you. Always involve yourself with something that’s bigger than you are, because that’s where God is. Every great success was, at the beginning, impossible. Keep in mind that security and opportunity are total strangers. You must be willing to trust in God, not in the security that this world offers, to see your dreams fulfilled. Jesus said in Mark 9:23 “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” If we can completely trust God and be convinced of His ability to empower us for success, truly all things are within our reach.

Be Courageous

Walt Disney also said that “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” The question then for most of us is, “Do we have the courage to pursue our dreams?” God is for us and has given many promises in His word. In Joshua 1:9, the Lord told Joshua just before leading the children of Israel into their promised land, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Regarding Mickey Mouse, Walt said this: “He popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad 20 years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at our lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner.”

Right here is where most of us stop; we are at our lowest ebb, things seem over, and we give up on pursuing that dream in our heart. We find ourselves in Egypt, like Joseph, wondering how this has happened. “What about the dream, what about the promises?” we begin to ask ourselves and God. A few years ago, statistics showed that 85% of small businesses fail. Interestingly enough, the experts noticed that many of those businesses closed just before becoming profitable. Most people quit right on the verge of success. Did you know that there is only one degree of difference between hot water and steam?

Be Persistent

Are you at a low point? Dreams seem like a faded memory? Are you tired and ready to give up? Listen, hang in there, be persistent; God won’t fail you! Maybe you’ve reached a place of discouragement and despair, and you just don’t feel like going on anymore. You wonder, “Where is God? Is there any hope left?” Perhaps a setback in your life has occurred – some unexpected turn of events, job loss, illness, the death of a loved one, divorce, or financial debt to name a few. You might be thinking, “How did I get to this place in my life?” “What about my dreams?” The enemy will try and convince you that God doesn’t care, what’s the point of praying, it’s over, give up! Paul told the Galatians in Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” It’s a conditional promise – you will reap a harvest if you persist – don’t quit, and continue forward in God!

Persistent people begin their success where most others quit. Remember, you’re an heir of God. You have an inheritance in God’s Kingdom. We should be known as a people of persistence and endurance. One person with commitment, persistence, and endurance will accomplish more than a thousand people with interest alone. Don’t look at how much money, resources or abilities you have to begin the pursuit of your dream. Just begin with a million dollars of determination. It’s not what you have, but what you do with what you have, that makes all the difference. God wants you to dream, and to dream big.

God Will Finish the Job

Don’t allow circumstances, time, others or the devil talk you out of those dreams, and the promises God has given you. God won’t quit on you! We are told in Philippians 1:6, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Dare to dream God-sized dreams and have the courage to pursue them; God will complete the good work in and through your life. Who knows, your dream may change the world!
